Frequency Band Allocation of Beidou Navigation System

The Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS, also known as COMPASS, Chinese transliteration: BeiDou) is a global satellite navigation system independently developed by China. It is the third mature satellite navigation system following GPS and GLONASS.

Beidou Generation I

The frequency band allocation of Beidou Generation I primarily involves the Radio Determination Satellite Service (RDSS) bands, specifically divided into uplink and downlink bands:
a) Uplink Band: This band is used for user equipment to transmit signals to satellites, with a frequency range of 1610MHz to 1626.5MHz, belonging to the L-band. This band design allows ground equipment to send positioning requests and other relevant information to satellites.
b) Downlink Band: This band is used for satellites to transmit signals to user equipment, with a frequency range of 2483.5MHz to 2500MHz, belonging to the S-band. This band design enables satellites to provide navigation information, positioning data, and other necessary services to ground equipment.
It is noteworthy that the frequency band allocation of Beidou Generation I was primarily designed to meet the technical requirements and positioning accuracy demands of that time. With technological advancements and continuous upgrades to the Beidou system, subsequent generations, including Beidou Generation II and III, adopted different frequency bands and signal modulation methods to provide higher-precision and more reliable navigation and positioning services.

Beidou Generation II

Beidou Generation II, the second-generation system of the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), is a globally accessible satellite navigation system independently developed by China. Building upon the foundation of Beidou Generation I, it aims to provide high-precision, high-reliability positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services to users worldwide. The system comprises three segments: space, ground, and user. The space segment includes multiple navigation satellites, the ground segment encompasses master control stations, monitoring stations, and uplink stations, while the user segment comprises various receiving devices.
The frequency band allocation of Beidou Generation II primarily encompasses three bands: B1, B2, and B3, with specific parameters as follows:
a) B1 Band: Frequency range of 1561.098MHz ± 2.046MHz, primarily used for civilian navigation and positioning services.
b) B2 Band: Frequency range of 1207.52MHz ± 2.046MHz, also primarily used for civilian services, working alongside the B1 band to provide dual-frequency positioning capabilities for enhanced positioning accuracy.
c) B3 Band: Frequency range of 1268.52MHz ± 10.23MHz, primarily used for military services, offering higher positioning accuracy and anti-interference capabilities.

Beidou Generation III

The third-generation Beidou Navigation System, also known as Beidou-3 Global Navigation Satellite System, is a globally accessible satellite navigation system independently constructed and operated by China. It has achieved a leap from regional to global coverage, providing high-precision, high-reliability positioning, navigation, and timing services to users worldwide. Beidou-3 offers multiple open service signals across the B1, B2, and B3 bands, including B1I, B1C, B2a, B2b, and B3I. The frequency allocations of these signals are as follows:
a) B1 Band: B1I: Center frequency of 1561.098MHz ± 2.046MHz, a basic signal widely used in various navigation devices; B1C: Center frequency of 1575.420MHz ± 16MHz, a primary signal supporting Beidou-3 M/I satellites and supported by newer, high-end mobile terminals.
b) B2 Band: B2a: Center frequency of 1176.450MHz ± 10.23MHz, also a primary signal supporting Beidou-3 M/I satellites and available on newer, high-end mobile terminals; B2b: Center frequency of 1207.140MHz ± 10.23MHz, supporting Beidou-3 M/I satellites but only available on select high-end mobile terminals.
c) B3 Band: B3I: Center frequency of 1268.520MHz ± 10.23MHz, supported by all satellites in both Beidou Generation II and III, with excellent support from multi-mode, multi-frequency modules.
